Why I’m Not Jumping on the New Year Hype Just Yet
Are you eagerly awaiting my New Year offers, goals, and inspirations to make this year your best yet? Well, I’ve got some news for you: I’m not doing that… at least, not yet. You might be wondering why. Isn’t this the perfect time to set resolutions, start fresh, and launch into action? Actually, it’s not—and I’m here to explain why.
Why winter feels wrong
It has become more and more clear to me that celebrating New Year in December feels "off". Celbrating until all hours seemed to go against my own body rythym, as if I was being shaken awake from a deep slumber
Why Spring Is the True New Year
If you think about it, starting the year in spring makes so much more sense. Nature itself mirrors this cycle. Spring is when the earth wakes up from its winter slumber, blossoms bloom, and new life begins to stir. Energy shifts from inward reflection to outward action. Birds build nests, animals come out of hibernation, and plants begin to grow again. Everything about spring signals a fresh start.
Contrast that with January: it’s cold, dark, and energetically quiet. Nature is still in hibernation mode, and we humans are no different. Winter is a time for rest, reflection, and turning inward—not for launching into full-speed-ahead mode.
The Downside of January Resolutions
Let’s be honest: how many New Year’s resolutions actually stick? Studies show that most people abandon their resolutions by mid-February. Why? Because the energy of January isn’t aligned with growth and renewal. Trying to force ourselves to start something new during this time often leads to frustration and burnout. Imagine trying to start a diet when your body is in " stock up for winter hibernation"mode!
Winter’s natural rhythm calls for slowing down. It’s a season of introspection and contemplation, a time to evaluate where we’ve been and where we want to go. When we ignore this and try to push forward prematurely, it’s like planting seeds in frozen ground—they’re unlikely to take root.
Honoring the Season You’re In
Instead of diving headfirst into resolutions and big goals, I encourage you to embrace the energy of winter. Use this time to rest, recharge, and reflect. Ask yourself:
What lessons have I learned over the past year?
What am I ready to release?
What do I truly want to create in the months ahead?
Give yourself permission to dream and plan without the pressure to act right away. By aligning with the natural rhythm of the seasons, you’ll be far more prepared to step into action when spring arrives.
What to Do Instead of Resolutions
Here are a few ways you can honor the energy of winter and set yourself up for success when the real new year begins:
1. Rest and Recharge
Winter is the ultimate season of self-care. Allow yourself to slow down and enjoy restorative practices like meditation, journaling, or simply curling up with a good book. This isn’t laziness; it’s preparation. By taking time to recharge now, you’ll have the energy and clarity to move forward later.
2. Reflect and Release
Take stock of the past year. What went well? What didn’t? What patterns or beliefs are you ready to let go of? Reflection is a powerful way to clear the slate and make room for new possibilities. Write down everything you achieved (it's SO empowering)
3. Dream and Envision
Winter is the perfect time to dream. Start visualizing what you want to create in the coming months. Consider creating a vision board or journaling about your ideal future. This isn’t about setting rigid goals; it’s about planting the seeds of inspiration.
4. Follow Your Inner Rhythm
Listen to your body and your intuition. If you feel called to rest, honor that. If you feel a spark of creativity, follow it. Trust that your inner rhythm will guide you toward what you need most during this season.
The Magic of Spring Energy
When spring finally arrives, you’ll feel the difference. The days grow longer, the air warms, and the energy around you shifts. Suddenly, it feels natural to start new projects, set goals, and take action. You’re no longer working against the tide; you’re moving with it.
By waiting until spring to fully launch into your plans, you’ll have the added benefit of clarity and renewed energy. You’ll know what you want and be ready to make it happen.
