I used to hate sewing. Ever since school, I had convinced myself that I simply couldn’t sew, and I never imagined it would become something I would enjoy.
When I was 30, I was given a sewing machine, but it sat untouched for nearly three decades. Then, at 58, I finally started using it, making simple bags for myself, just for the pleasure of making something with my hands. I loved it, but I wanted something I could do in the evenings without getting the sewing machine, fabric and everything else out.
So I started hand sewing.
What surprised me was how quickly I began to relax. There was something about the simple rhythm of taking the needle through the fabric, pulling the thread through and making the next stitch that quietened my mind. I found myself slipping into a kind of meditative state, completely absorbed in the small, repetitive movement of my hands.
That’s where A Stitch in Time began.
It’s an invitation to slow down and make something without a pattern, a plan or any sewing experience. You’ll have a collection of fabrics, ribbons, threads, lace and little pieces to choose from, and you can simply begin. Follow one stitch after another, add a square of fabric here, a ribbon there, perhaps a button or a piece of lace, and see where it takes you.
There’s no right way to do it and nothing you need to finish. You don’t need to know what you’re making before you begin. The joy is in the process, in letting your hands take the lead and discovering what emerges along the way.
You don't need to know how to fancy stitches, jsut thread the needle and go.
Come and spend a little time making, stitching and slowing down. You might surprise yourself with what you create, but more importantly, you may discover how good it feels to simply sit, stitch and be absorbed in the moment. And while we stitch, we talk, laugh, connect and simply enjoy being in the moment.
